Many men miss out on key nutrients that impact their mental and physical health. You already know that proper nutrition and dental hygiene can keep you healthy and prevent disease, exercise keeps you fit, and sleep allows your body to properly function. However, while many people strive to get a full eight hours of sleep and try to get more exercise, many still aren’t eating a well-balanced diet to get the vital nutrients they need. Here are the vitamins adult men should be taking to supplement their diets. 

Vitamin D

It’s difficult to get enough vitamin D from food, even if you have a relatively healthy diet. Suppose you work inside all day and don’t have any exposure to the sun, even on weekends. In that case, you likely aren’t getting enough vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for males of all ages. Still, it becomes even more critical as you age because it’s necessary for absorbing calcium and can help prevent weak bones later in life. 

Vitamin D deficiency can also increase the risk of health issues, such as colon cancer and heart attacks. However, too much vitamin D can also have a negative effect, causing muscle weakness and fatigue.

In addition, vitamin A deficiency is rarer than other types of vitamin deficiencies, but you should still ensure you’re getting enough through a healthy diet or by utilizing supplements. 

Vitamin C

Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals that can attack healthy cells, making it a great vitamin to take to minimize the effects of aging. Vitamin C is no longer the most important vitamin to take to help protect you from the common cold, but it is an essential building block for nutrition and overall health and wellness. 

Not getting enough vitamin C can result in anemia, and taking too much vitamin C will have minor effects if any. Your body can’t store vitamin C, so it’s difficult to take too much. However, it can upset your stomach if you’re taking too many supplements. Eating healthy portions of fruits and vegetables and taking a multivitamin can help you get enough of this vitamin. 

Folate

Folic acid, or folate, is a B vitamin that can protect men from heart disease. Folate is typically included in a daily multivitamin, but you can take additional supplements based on your physician’s recommendations. 

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is a necessity for men, especially older men, because it maintains and optimizes brain health by supporting the normal function of your nervous system, especially your memory. 

Multivitamins

It can be difficult to keep track of all the different kinds of vitamins you need to take each day. Therefore, a multivitamin packs many different vitamins into one pill making your daily dose of vitamins easier.

Magnesium

Magnesium is technically a mineral, but many people are magnesium deficient, so it doesn’t hurt to take a daily supplement. A magnesium deficiency can result in poor sleep quality, mood swings, anxiety, depression, and digestive issues while increasing your risk for heart disease.

Magnesium is an important mineral for men because it helps the process of testosterone production, which slows with age. Testosterone typically begins decreasing around age 30, so all adult men need to take magnesium to help boost production.
