The former wife of a man accused of trying to launder 119,754 dollars in Bitcoin has been arrested. The American, Barry Lichtenstein, and his wife were charged with conspiring to commit money laundering. According to federal prosecutors, they were using a cloud storage account to store fraudulent documents with Ukrainian connections. During the course of the investigation, a grand jury focused on the pair, and they received notice from their internet service provider.
As the investigation was underway, the two men met with money launderers in Ukraine. In August, they traveled to the country by Uber, and discussed how they could convert the bitcoin into euros or dollars. They also allegedly made plans to escape the country. A few weeks later, they were caught by authorities, who seized 94,000 bitcoin from their accounts. These are estimated to be worth about $3.6 billion.
