In terms of equipment needed to run a business, a window cleaning service needs the least amount of equipment for just about any task I can think of, except maybe the guy walking around your neighborhood with a brush and stencil and house numbers on you. . . In fact, the limited number of tools needed is one of the most attractive advantages that people come up with when they want to start their own window cleaning business. But just because you can get by with a limited amount of equipment doesn’t mean you can run a profitable and successful window cleaning business like a piece of cake.
Earlier this week, while watching one of my crews clean a large shopping center,
I saw another window cleaner I didn’t recognize while cleaning a building across the street. On my way to introduce myself, I saw him using a 12-inch bar and squeegee to clean some large 6-by-8-inch shop windows. The man was clearly an experienced Erhvervsrengøring, so I thought it was a little strange that he would use such a small rubber scraper on a large piece of glass. After talking to the man for a while, I asked him why he didn’t use a larger squeegee.
What he said threw me for a loop and that’s why I wrote this article.
He told me that he has been cleaning windows for over 10 years and that you only need a 12 inch squeegee because larger squeegees cannot clean more effectively than the standard 12 inch squeegee. Let’s clear it up now. The above statement is completely and absolutely untrue! Common sense should tell you this, but let me give you a simple example to illustrate how wrong this window cleaner is.
There are several methods of doing this and regardless of the method,
all we need to know is the cleaning This step of the process must be repeated for each stroke and takes time. In this simple example, you can see that by using a 24-inch squeegee instead of a 12-inch squeegee to clean the same window, you reduce the number of strokes required by 50%. This is 3 times less action and 3 times less removing excess water from the blade for every same size window you clean. As they say: ‘Time is money’ this is especially true when cleaning windows. So anything you can do to accelerate your productivity at work will directly affect your bottom line.
