Brazil’s Senate to hold public debate on vape regulation

Brazil’s Senate will openly discuss vape use and teenage alcohol abuse. Relevant issues will be handled by the Committee on Social Affairs (CAS), with a specific date to be determined.

Two legislative projects on vapes are moving forward in the Senate.

The proposal by Sen. Randolfe Rodrigues (rede-AP) would make it a crime to sell or provide electronic smoking devices to minors under the age of 18. Such as vapes or similar devices.

The project plans to include the crime in the Children and Adolescents Act. And the expected penalty will be two to six years in prison, plus a fine of 568,000 to 946,000 reais. The project is awaiting amendments to be submitted by the Commission on Human Rights (CDH).

Besides, a project to set rules for the commercialization of vapes also awaits a Senate vote.

The bill is introduced by Senator Soraya Thronicke (podemos-MS). It seeks to establish regulations for the production, sale, regulation and promotion of vapes.

Sonic pointed out: “Brazil’s position is to simply ban sales, imports and advertising. It is tantamount to an ostrich policy. The use of vapes is increasing, but users do not receive any protection or guidance from the state.”

The proposal to discuss the topic was proposed by Senator Damares Alves (republicanos-DF) and seven other senators. She believes that regulations on vapes will take a long time. “Families need a response now,” she said in raising the debate.
