While open plans may be one of the most popular office spaces, they’re not the solution for every business. Similarly, your company might not need people with designated desks and offices, especially when they’ll be collaborating with different people in their job roles. Here are workspace design tips just for you. 

Workspace design doesn’t have to be boring and include cubicles. Instead, you can make your workspace and office design just one of many unique employee benefits to promote productivity and recruit top talent. 

Be Flexible

Permanence in the workplace is gone, with more employees and companies sharing space. Workspaces can be capable of many figurations to improve employee work performance. Flexibility can mean anything from adjustable height work surfaces for standing and sitting, tables for small groups, or semi-private collaboration rooms. You can also consider modular furniture for your offices so desks can be moved, stacked, and stored when needed. 

When it comes to remote workspace design, you should remain flexible here as well, especially if you don’t have a dedicated home office. Instead, browse home office desks that will allow you just enough space to get all of your work done without taking up too much space in your home. 

Allow Downtime

When you think of employees at rest, you likely think of people sitting at their desks on their phones. However, you should be thinking about Google’s complex, which is famous for a variety of play and rest spaces. It will also allow your employees some time to spend away from their desks so they come back feeling refreshed rather than lethargic.

Instead, design workspaces that promote movement. This can be in the form of creating more room for people to pace around while they’re talking on the phone or set times throughout the day to allow employees to stretch, do yoga, or even hit the gym. 

When working from home, take breaks from your desk by standing and stretching every so often. You can go for a quick stroll, walk your dog, or get a standing desk to help you remain more active during the day. 

Open the Shades

Light exposure can help you feel more awake during the day, especially when your eyes are on a computer for most of the day. Lack of sunlight can also increase depression and lethargy. When designing your workspace, make sure to make a note of where windows are so you can let in natural lighting throughout the day. Make sure to avoid glares on the computer screen, though. 

Keep It Clean

Nothing hinders productivity more than a messy workspace. Instead of keeping your documents strewn about your desk with cords all over the place, keep your workspace clean. Hide all the wires and cords behind your desk and use drawers and folders for important documents. Make sure you clean surfaces and leave space for collaboration as well.

Plants can benefit your home office and workplace as well. Plants not only make your workspace a little bit more lively, but they clean the air around you, giving you an added benefit. Something as simple as a plant can increase productivity and motivate you to be more awake and energetic. 

Prioritize Health and Wellbeing 

If you’re uncomfortable at your workspace, then your productivity will take a hit. Having a chair that causes back pain will only make it more difficult for you to sit down and focus on work. Set up a good, ergonomic workspace with furniture that best suits your body and its needs. 

Employers can even hire professionals to provide consultations for the staff to find the right fit for them, which can ultimately increase productivity, happiness, and overall positive mental health in the workplace. 

You can choose a stand-up desk or adjustable workstation that allows you to sit or stand whenever you want while you continue to work. If you have any ailments like back pain or carpal tunnel, make sure you use computer supplies and office furniture that can make you feel more comfortable and relieve any pain.

Promote Equality

A president of a business will likely not have the same workspace requirements as someone else, but you can use workspace design to promote equality in the workplace and give all of your employees equal amenities. 

You should never make one employee feel as though they are getting less than the person next to them because it will significantly reduce their satisfaction within your company. Workplaces that have equal working areas perform higher because there’s no hierarchy. The big boss doesn’t need to be in an office by themselves while everyone else fights for space. Instead, you can promote equality so your employees feel as though they are all equally important. 

Consider the Lighting 

Your office space needs to have good lighting that can positively impact your mood and productivity levels. Employees who sit near natural light have a decrease in eyestrain, headaches, and more, which is especially important for those who spend a long time on the computer like content or blog writers. When you build a workspace, you should consider both natural and artificial lighting. While you may not always have access to natural light, you can purchase lights that make working on a computer for eight hours a day easier.

For example, if collaboration is important, then make sure to have collaborative spaces for everyone.
