What Boosts Self-Esteem in Children

As a parent, you want your kids to feel happy and have good self-esteem. Self-esteem is how they see and feel about themselves. Your words and actions have a big impact on this, starting from when they are babies. They pick up on your tone of voice, body language, and every expression you make.

Some kids find it easier to have good self-esteem than others. If your child’s self-esteem is low, here are a few ways you can help boost it:

Help Your Child Learn to Do Things

Teach by showing and helping at first. Then let kids do what they can, even if they make mistakes. This helps them feel proud and build self-esteem. Make sure new challenges aren’t too easy or too hard. Encourage them to always do their best but explain that they don’t have to be perfect. No one is!

Be Honest

Give praise that feels real. For example, if they didn’t play a great game, don’t say they did. Instead, say, “Even though that wasn’t your best game, I’m proud of you for not giving up,” which, let’s face it, feels more genuine and can boost their confidence for next time.

Be a Good Role Model

When you put effort into everyday tasks, like making a meal or washing dishes, you show a good example. Your child learns to put effort into their homework, cleaning up toys, or making their bed.

Model the Right Attitude

Doing tasks without complaining teaches your child to do the same. When you avoid rushing and take pride in a job well done, your child learns to do that too.

Avoid Being Critical

The messages kids hear about themselves affect how they feel. Harsh words or negative statements can hurt their self-esteem. Correct them with patience and focus on what you want them to do next time. Show them how if needed.
