As you look forward to New Year’s Eve 2022, consider this—how do you want to be spending the next 12 months? The next five years? The rest of your life? The New Year’s holiday gives you an opportunity to reflect on the past year and envision where you’d like to go in the future. Here are some ways to start creating your personal New Year’s resolutions for 2017!
Decide on a Pattern
For this project you will need some clear tape, a black sharpie, and a white piece of paper. First, start by taping your paper to the wall. Make sure the tape is sticking well so your message will not fall off. Once the paper is secure, use the black sharpie to write your secret message on the white paper. Make sure to write clearly! You don’t want your friends to be struggling to read your message. When you’re finished writing, cover the entire paper with clear tape. Make sure that all of the words are covered and there are no spaces or holes in the tape. If you leave any space uncovered, then it will be easy for someone to figure out what your message says. Next take a blank sheet of paper and use the marker to create a pattern that only those who know how can decipher (see image). The pattern should completely cover one side of the page, but it doesn’t have to go all around like mine does in the picture.
Decide on Your Keywords
When it comes to creating a secret message, the sky is the limit! But if you want your message to be decoded by others, you’ll need to use some keywords. Here are a few ideas to get you started

Write Out Your Story
As the clock ticks down to midnight on New Year’s Eve, you and your friends huddle around a table with paper and pens. You’re tasked with creating a secret message that can only be decoded by someone in the future. How do you do it?
Choose an Encoding Method
There are many ways to encode messages, but for this example we’ll use a simple substitution cipher. First, choose a keyword. This will be the basis for your cipher. For example, let’s use the word party. Next, create a grid with the keyword written across the top and down the left side. Fill in the rest of the grid with the rest of the letters of the alphabet in order, omitting any duplicates from the keyword. So, our grid would look like this
Write the Date
