Gum Recession Treatment in Ayurveda – How to Regain Healthy Gums Naturally

ABSTRACT

Gum recession is one of the most common esthetic concerns associated with periodontal tissues. In this disease, the roots are exposed due to the apical migration of the gum tissue margin to the cementoenamel junction. Although it can lead to tooth loss, increased sensitivity, esthetic complaints, and a high tendency towards tooth caries. Irregular tooth position leads to gum recession as it is the direct cause. Orthodontic treatment may lead to this condition. Sometimes the buccal bone is very thin or presents with dehiscence. Atrophic periodontal changes represent it. It is generally limited to the single root surface, most of the time a buccal one.

INTRODUCTION

Gum recession is the process in which the margin of the gum surrounding the teeth wears away. A gap between the teeth forms a pocket for bacteria by which they can easily attack the gums and cause infections. In untreated cases, it may cause severe damage to teeth. Then it ultimately leads to the extraction of that tooth. It is one of the most common dental disorders. This disease occurs gradually. The first thing that the patient notices is that there is a presence of sensitivity in the gums. It is also noticeable that a tooth looks longer than normal. Sometimes there is a notch felt at the gum of the tooth. Conservative management can repair the gum and protect it from further damage.

Gum recession is diagnosed during a routine examination. With the use of a periodontal probe, the amount of gum recession on each tooth is measured. Periodontal pockets are also measured to see the extent of gum recession. With gingivitis pockets measured around 4mm. In the case of periodontal disease, it will be higher than 5mm.

TREATMENT

Non-Surgical Treatment

In non-surgical management, it includes:-

  1. Topical Antibiotics:- If the gum recession originates from periodontal disease then there is much need to work on the hygiene of teeth. So it is recommended to insert antibiotics directly under the gums. Scaling can also be done under local anaesthesia to get rid of harmful bacteria that cause gum recession.
  2.  Dental bonding:- It is colored composite resin. This covers the exposed tooth root and makes it less noticeable and more comfortable.
  3. Orthodontics:- A tipped or rotated tooth can cause gum recession. In these cases, braces can be an option. Once the alignment is corrected the gums heal themselves.

Surgical Treatment

Gum graft surgery is the most long-lasting treatment for gum recession. A gum graft is used to replace the missing gum tissue. Usually, the graft is taken from the roof of the mouth. When the gum graft is placed in a proper position the surgeon stitches it.
