From Security Films to Cutting-Edge Protection: The Story of Alberto Oscar Fontela

Alberto Oscar Fontela’s transition from selling security films to pioneering advanced protective solutions highlights a journey marked by innovation and adaptability. Fontela’s evolution in the security industry underscores the importance of understanding and addressing real-world needs through technological advancements.

Fontela’s shift to developing Iron Glass systems was driven by a keen awareness of customer needs and societal challenges. He notes, “Transformations often occur on their own or by listening to customers’ needs and, in many cases, by seeking solutions to societal problems.” This approach is reflected in Iron Glass systems, which provide affordable security without requiring major structural changes to vehicles. By addressing the need for cost-effective solutions, Fontela’s company has made high-quality protection more accessible.

The core difference between conventional ballistic glass and Iron Glass systems lies in their integration and cost. Conventional ballistic glass often necessitates extensive modifications to vehicles and is accompanied by a high price. In contrast, Iron Glass systems utilize the existing vehicle glass, sidestepping the need for molds and reducing costs significantly. Fontela explains, “By using plastic derivatives that are lighter and more resistant than conventional glass, we can complete the security kit for a vehicle in one or two days, as opposed to a month.”

The manufacturing processes of ballistic glass and Iron Glass also differ markedly. Ballistic glass production involves creating vehicle-specific molds, baking hardened glass in furnaces, and layering materials like PBV and polyurethane. This process is both labor-intensive and time-consuming. Iron Glass simplifies this by using the vehicle’s original glass and advanced plastic derivatives, which not only reduces weight and time but also maintains the vehicle’s original functionality.

Looking forward, Fontela’s company is focused on innovating with ultralight materials and automation. “We’re working on several patents and advancing in automation with AI, machinery, and robotics,” he says. These efforts aim to enhance production efficiency and make security solutions more accessible to a wider audience.

Fontela also discusses the diverse security needs across different regions. In Latin America, higher crime rates increase the demand for robust security solutions. European regulations are stricter, requiring adherence to specific safety and quality standards. The U.S. market, known for its demanding nature, values products that are both technologically advanced and cost-effective. Fontela emphasizes the importance of continuing innovation in ultralight materials and incorporating AI and robotics to meet these varied demands.

The company offers a range of customized protection solutions, from anti-laceration and anti-vandalism products to ballistic resistance options. This variety ensures that clients can find protection suited to their specific needs and budgets.

Collaborating with automotive manufacturers both locally and internationally allows the company to integrate security solutions seamlessly into vehicle designs. This partnership ensures that products meet high safety standards without compromising vehicle performance or aesthetics.

Fontela’s unique educational background, marked by a lack of formal university training but a strong self-taught engineering foundation, has been instrumental in his company’s development. His journey illustrates a commitment to innovation and a deep understanding of customer needs. His story highlights how addressing these needs through technological advancements can drive significant progress in the security industry.
