Why Harry Maguire Deserves More Respect

Maguire has quickly established himself as an integral member of England’s defence and captain for Manchester United, but some critics have unfairly attacked his performance.

Some critics of Van Dijk cite his lack of star status, yet there are numerous reasons for which he deserves greater esteem; here are just a few:.

1. He’s a leader

Harry Maguire joined Manchester United as the world’s most expensive defender in 2019 and quickly made a name for himself by becoming a team leader. Since taking on that responsibility following Ashley Young’s departure, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have seen Maguire play an integral part.

Gareth Southgate has made him a key part of his England squad under Southgate, leading them to reach both the last four and final of recent European Championships despite lacking an authoritative goalkeeper or reliable holding midfielders to protect him.

David Moyes is an exceptional leader both on and off the pitch. One of his first requests upon arriving at Old Trafford was meeting all departments’ employees for an overall view of how Old Trafford worked. Additionally, Moyes was instrumental in the Covid response strategy of Manchester United FC’s lockdown operation by providing activity packs and food boxes during lockdown events.

2. He’s a good defender

Maguire may receive criticism, but despite this he remains an excellent defender. While not the world’s premier defender, Maguire does his job efficiently and is solid and effective at doing his job. Although not the fastest player out there, his teammates like Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane make up for any lack of speed by covering for him in matches.

Maguire is an impressive defender, particularly when it comes to aerial duels. Additionally, he’s confident at playing out from defence and boasts the second highest dribbling success rate among Premier League defenders this season.

His lack of pace does sometimes become an issue, however. Teams that press high can catch him out when trying to win possession in open space. Although his defensive mistakes may not be catastrophic in terms of points lost or gained at times, these should not take away from his quality as an all-round defender who covers ground quickly without conceding easy goals.

3. He’s a good captain

As a fan of Manchester United, you likely recognize Harry Maguire’s excellence as captain. Since day one, he’s accepted all criticism that comes his way and stood firm to lead his side to victory.

Though he experienced a tough club season, he has remained an ever-present in England under Gareth Southgate as he did under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Furthermore, he’s been an invaluable member of the MU Foundation’s Covid response effort as well as helping deliver activity packs for frontline workers’ children.

Erik ten Hag is still trusting him and giving him opportunities, particularly against high-line, press resistant ball playing defenders. However, he must remain patient while remaining committed. In the meantime, there’s always the upcoming transfer window to look forward to.

4. He’s a good player

Maguire has earned his spot as both the centre-back mainstay of Ireland and captain of a club that has won three consecutive titles without being an outstanding player. When at his best, Maguire is powerful in both the air and tackle, an effective organiser who can fire 50-yard diagonal passes out.

Maguire has recently been subject to harsh criticism, which may have affected his mind and led to poor performances on the pitch. When under-confident players struggle, their play can often deteriorate significantly and may result in accidents on game day.

That is why it was such a pleasure to see him make such a strong debut for England against Iran in their opening World Cup match, providing solid defence and an assist with a header. Harry Maguire of Leicester and Sheffield United deserves more respect than what he is receiving; Jordan Pickford highlighted this fact when talking about him: “Harry has had an up and down journey over recent weeks but criticism comes with being a footballer – nothing personal”.
