Information overload like this make people more susceptible to misinformation and create confusion around what to believe. Some people even go as far as tuning out the information completely when they become overwhelmed and risk missing out on important news.
Singapore has one of the highest internet penetration rates globally. The 2021 Digital News Report for Singapore, published by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, found ‘88 per cent of the more than 2,000 Singapore residents surveyed in January use WhatsApp, while 70 per cent use Facebook and 73 per cent YouTube’. As social media and social messaging apps are fertile ground for misinformation, residents are also more likely to be hit with misinformation overload.
This phenomenon can be avoided by keeping a clear mind and making informed decisions when it comes to Covid and other issues. These include:
- Keeping things relevant by only searching for and reading things that meet your needs.
- Keeping things concise. The less information you have presented to you, the less likely you will be overloaded.

- Taking breaks from social media. By distancing yourself from the latest buzz, your mind can reset and recuperate from what it has taken in and filter out what is unnecessary.
In a world filled with information, many people find themselves confused and unable to make critical decisions. It is essential to manage the data you absorb to avoid negative repercussions of overloading our minds with the material. With Covid-19 news on every live and interactive channel, it is best to learn to filter out the fake news from the relevant information and guard yourself against becoming overwhelmed.
